The book of Lamentations is often associated with sorrow, grief, and deep emotional pain. Jeremiah, often called “the weeping prophet,” poured out his heart in raw honesty about the devastation surrounding him. The city was destroyed, the people were broken, and hope seemed almost impossible to grasp.

And yet, right in the middle of the darkness, in the center of Jeremiah’s grief, comes one of the most powerful declarations of God’s love in all of Scripture:

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is Your faithfulness.”

 Lamentations 3:22–23

These words are not spoken from a mountaintop.
They are spoken from the ruins.

A Love That Doesn’t Run Out

Jeremiah reminds us that God’s love is not fragile, conditional, or dependent on our circumstances. The Hebrew word for "great love" here is hesed — a word that means covenant love, loyal love, unfailing love.

It’s the kind of love that holds you when life breaks apart.
The kind that keeps you when your strength runs out.
The kind that refuses to let your story end in destruction.

Even when everything looks hopeless, God’s love steps in and says,
“You will not be consumed.”

Compassion That Never Fails

Jeremiah doesn’t say God’s compassion sometimes fails or occasionally weakens.
He says it never fails.

God doesn’t grow tired of us.
He doesn’t get fed up with our struggles.
He doesn’t throw His hands up and walk away.

Where people may run out of patience, God never runs out of compassion.

New Every Morning

Every sunrise is a reminder that God has already refilled what life drained out of you the day before. New mercy. New strength. New grace. New hope.

There is no “old batch” of mercy being recycled.
Every morning, God gives you something fresh, enough for today, enough for what you face, enough to carry you through.

Jeremiah may have looked around and seen destruction, but he looked up and saw faithfulness.

Great Is Your Faithfulness

Jeremiah didn’t deny the pain, but he refused to let the pain define God’s character.

Even when we can’t trace what God is doing, we can trust who He is.
And He is faithful.
Faithful when we’re weak.
Faithful when we’re unsure.
Faithful when life hurts.
Faithful when we’re waiting for change.

A Love That Holds You

Jeremiah’s declaration reminds us that God’s love is not proven in the absence of pain
it is proven in His presence through the pain.

You may be walking through a difficult season right now, but you are not walking alone. God’s great love surrounds you, His compassion covers you, and His mercy meets you every single morning.

Your situation may change,
your emotions may shift,
your strength may fade

but God’s love remains unshakeable.

Because of His great love,
you will not be consumed.

Prayer for today;

Father, thank You for Your unfailing and unchanging love. Just as Jeremiah declared, Your mercies never run out and Your compassion never fails. When life feels heavy, remind us that we are not consumed because Your great love holds us together. Strengthen us with new mercy today. Help us to see Your faithfulness even in difficult moments, and anchor our hearts in Your unshakable love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
